Janis takes over the Electric Room

I went to the Electric Room last night to see my friend Justin Dean Thomas deejay. The Electric Room is a new place underneath the Dream Hotel where Chelsea ends and the Meat Packing District begins. I haven't been out much lately because I've been busy at the studio, doing lots of research on Janis, applying to grad schools, and that other thing some of us unfortunately have to do called working. But I think it's important not to fall off the face of the earth and it's also nice to stay connected to other people who are fighting the same fight you are. Justin is also an actor, and a musician as well. He is in a great band called The Bowery Riots, so we get each other on that level of, "Hey, we both picked some of the most difficult life paths ever! Cool!"

On the wall at the Electric Room "All Evil Things" Muahahahhahah!

As I was dancing away with my lovely friend Ashley, and our new friend Miles, a nice gentleman that we just met who is the singer for a band called Outernational, Justin said to me, this next one's for you. I had no idea what he was going to play, but all of a sudden, Janis's song Move Over came on. It was such a great moment because it occurred to me that I never have heard one of Janis's songs played by a deejay before. There are certain songs that you always hear when you are out and about, and for some reason Janis's songs are not part of that mix. I don't understand why, because her songs are obviously incredible, but perhaps it is because most deejays don't associate her music with dancing? Regardless, the best part was, the crowd had such a great reaction.

Ashley & I... Someone told us we both looked like Vampiresses. Compliment? I think yes!

It was a nice feeling to know that because I was there, and that because Justin is a good deejay, we got to share Janis with the Electric Room and all the people that were there. As the song was playing, a girl came up to me and asked me who was singing? I said, "Janis Joplin, of course!" And she said, "Ohhhh!" After all, the place is sort of dedicated to Rock & Roll, so Janis, Justin, Miles, Ashley & I fit right in, and just for a second it felt like home, sweet, home.

Closing thoughts: 1. The Electric Room was great. Yes, I would recommend it 2. All deejays need to incorporate more Janis into their sets 3. Miles' band, Outernational, is playing tomorrow night (Friday, September 30th at The Knitting Factory... Go see them! & 4. Everyone mentioned in this article is awesome and therefore you should follow them all on Twitter... @JustinDeanNY @AshleyJayne__ @MilesSolay @ElectricRoomNY @DreamDowntown
